AMDER Timeline

2025

Business Development - A Key Engine of Growth

Time: May 28, 2026

Location: Chartmant Suites Hotel

Message: The Mekong Delta plays a crucial role in food production and agricultural exports. However, the growth model based on natural resources, raw production, and small-scale households has reached its limits. The Mekong Delta Economic Report 2025 identifies enterprises as the main driving force in restructuring the regional economy: private businesses upgrade value chains, FDI fosters linkages, state-owned enterprises develop infrastructure, while cooperatives and farmers become partners in supply chains. The breakthrough by 2030 will not simply be about increasing output, but about building a modern ecosystem of agriculture – processing – logistics – technology, aiming toward green and sustainable growth.

2024

Mobilizing investment for sustainable development

Date: March 27, 2025

Location: Nikko Saigon Hotel

Message: A bottlekneck throughout AMDER over the years points to underinvestment and inefficiency as the key cause of the downward spiral and the backwardness of the Mekong Delta. Investment capital has been mentioned as a solution to the weaknesses of the Mekong Delta, but detailed assessments have been lacking. Following the research results, the 2024 AMDER with the focus on “Mobilizing Investment for Sustainable Development” focuses on the issues of resources, needs and efficiency as well as investment challenges of the Mekong Delta. Thereby, the 2024 AMDER proposes appropriate policy recommendations for stakeholders to realize the potential of the region.

2023

Institutional, Governance and Regional linkages Bottlenecks

Institutional, Governance and Regional linkages Bottlenecks

Date: December 12, 2023

Location: Sheraton Hotel Can Tho

Scale: More than 500 delegates

Message: The 2023 AMDER goes straight to the key issues, the root cause of the backwardness of the Mekong Delta is the governance, coordination and regional linkage mechanism. Although the Mekong Delta is rich in potential, it is lagging behind the economic growth of the whole country. On the other hand, the governance, coordination and regional linkage mechanism lacks effectiveness and efficiency. While the “centrifugal” forces weakening regional linkages are still numerous, the “centripetal” forces tightening regional linkages are very weak.

2022

Transformation of Development Model and Regional Integrated Planning

Date: August 01, 2022

Location: Muong Thanh Can Tho Hotel

Scale: More than 400 delegates

Message: The 2022 AMDER indicates that the Mekong Delta is facing at least three "downward spirals" including "economic spiral", "environmental spiral" and "social spiral". Therefore, only by breaking some links of the downward spirals, then reversing them into upward spirals, can the Mekong Delta transform its economic development model and improve people's income and living standards.

2020

Enhancing Competitiveness for Sustainable Development

Date: December 14, 2020

Location: TTC Hotel Can Tho

Scale: More than 300 delegates

Message: AMDER 2020 reviews the development of the Mekong Delta region over the past decade. Accordingly, AMDER summarizes achievements and highlights limitations in the development process, while outlining opportunities and challenges that are occurring and will occur in the Mekong. AMDER also identifies 7 main groups of challenges and bottlenecks in the Mekong Delta region.
